Get your garden ready for summer

A neat lawn is a joy to see in a British summer garden, so it’s a good idea to make sure yours is in top shape. You may need to re-seed some areas if there are weeds growing there. Aerate and scratch the soil, then cut back the grass to about 1 cm high. Don’t let the grass grow too long, though, or it will dry out and become brittle.

Weeds can be a nuisance when growing in your garden, and if left unchecked, can cause problems for your plants. Weeds can grow quickly and spread easily through the soil. You can try to remove them yourself, but you will need to get down on your hands and knees to dig out each individual plant. Alternatively, you can spray herbicides around your garden to kill the weeds. Be careful, however, because doing so can damage your plants and leave harmful chemicals in the environment. A more effective option is to apply a weed control product to your garden. These products contain natural ingredients that help prevent weeds from germinating. Some also contain fertilisers that encourage healthy growth in your plants.

Sheds in most homes are notoriously over-filled and often contain a great deal of unwanted junk. Decluttering in the summer months is easier thanks to the increased amount of daylight and the usually temperate weather. If you’ve been hoarding a lot of items in recent years without ever using them, it could be time to let some of them go. If you’re able to completely empty the shed for a while, you can then clean the interior more easily. Putting all the remaining items back in a neat and tidy manner will help you get more from the shed in the coming years.

You should always keep an eye out for mould growth when cleaning your outdoor furniture. If you notice spots or stains on your cushions, there’s no need to throw them away immediately. You should wash them thoroughly and then use a commercial cleaning agent to get them back to looking their best. Once you have cleaned everything, put them back together and enjoy your outdoor space.

Before summer gets fully under way, it’s a good idea give your fence a revitalising look of colour and health with a treatment such as creosote. This will help protect your fence against the heat of the sun and also keep it looking its best throughout summer. Then, you can settle back and enjoy your garden whether that involves al fresco be cooking, playing music, sketching, reading books or just spending time together with friends and loved ones.
